Vessel Figure #1 is the painting where it all clicked for me. And every painting & drawing since then springs from it. By dialing back narrative/text, and focusing instead on layering candy colors with simple forms, the result is a more enigmatic storyline. Less AND more. Teetering between funny-ha-ha and funny-disturbing, Drawing you in AND pushing you back. Cheerful figures can be beguiling, but what to make of the open mouths, sharp teeth or beseeching eyes? Creating that tension, that deceptive simplicity, is what makes me paint.
